As digital technologies become embedded in our lives, the need for a new, & shared data ethos grows more urgent. Without shared principles, we risk exacerbating existing biases that are part of our current datasets.Theres not ony a lack of transperancy in the digital world in regards to how our data is being used, but a lack of digital education as well.

What Does it Really Mean To Be Online?

The overall theme that we chose for our project is the “Ethical Digital World”. To gain insight into the particular issues that relate to the question, “How do we design and change the digital world to make it more humane and ethical,” we conducted online secondary research where we examined online communities and articles. As the digital world gains more influence in our everyday lives, more concern is being raised over the safety and ethics of our privacy, data handling, and security. After discussing and researching with our group, we decided to focus on privacy and data handling of apps and social media platforms. Moreover, we decided to create ways in which users can become educated on the issues that surround the digital world and showcase information that is transparent with its user data. Nowadays, everyone is an online user and it is important for people to be aware and educated to make our digital world safe, yet engaging.

Our solution is a simple app that focuses on educating consumers about how certain applications manage their data through digital education and recommendations. Summary terms of service, a ranking system based on ethical objectives, user and official reviews, recommendations for related programs, and more will be available.

Findings & Resources Used.

Our research reveals a critical disconnect between user awareness of digital concepts like cookies and terms of service and their trust in how tech companies manage their data. While users appreciate the convenience and social connectivity offered by platforms like Instagram, they express significant concerns about data privacy, particularly regarding personal information, financial details, and private communications. This tension between the desire for personalized experiences and anxieties about data handling underscores a critical need for increased transparency and accountability from tech companies to foster a more ethical and secure digital environment.
